The French Government – Recognizes digital signatures legally

February 19th, 2009

The France government has acknowledged the importance of digital signature technology and is the first in Europe to establish a new law that explicitly accepts handwritten digital signatures as equivalent to wet signatures on paper. To promote that, an electronic legal document was signed on a Wacom tablet by Rachida Dati, Keeper of the Seals, Minister of Justice and Eric Besson, Secretary of State at the French High Council for the legal profession. The signature of this fully paperless document took place at a ceremony to introduce the digitization of notary documents in France.
